Description

William H. Johnson was a profound artist who became well-known for his paintings depicting African American life and history. Johnson’s early development and international studies as an artist would eventually lead him to be drawn towards the Modernist Art Movement.

Inspired by modernism, Johnson’s Jitterbug, depicts two figures composed of flat forms and shapes with vibrant colors. The figures perform the titled dance, while one can imagine jubilant music playing in the background. With works like Jitterbug, Johnson presents scenes where African American art and culture are vivid and full of life.
