In confronting how Black women’s bodies have been relegated to being viewed as exotic, unseemly and disposable, this issue highlights both visual and literary refutations in the work of the featured writers and artists. They choose to define and appropriate their own space. They choose to be seen differently. A counter–hegemonic discourse to the institutionalized habitus regarding how the African Diasporan woman has been portrayed is presented in the aesthetic oeuvre and literary revelations of artists and writers Vinnie Bagwell, Sonya Clark, Delita Martin, Dr. Marilyn S. Mobley, Shantay Robinson, Tschabalala Self, Lina Iris Viktor, and Pamela Williams. These artists and writers have created their own mirrors to reflect the mystery, the beauty and the just being regular that is themselves.
The artwork displayed here is stunningly diverse. In these pages your eyes will be fed both realistic and figurative representation, print work that is emotionally fecund, conceptual, and mythical imagery, along with assemblage. However, there is a thread that runs through the thought–provoking art and writing. That thread is an acknowledgement and an honoring of the true source of our reflections, i.e., our familial ancestors, and our cultural DNA.
