The African Presence
Published in 1991, this 56–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to charting the African presence in the visual and literary arts of the Caribbean and North America. Covered in this issue are news about the Miami Book Fair International, and the Arts Council of the African Studies Association’s (ACASA’s) Ninth Triennial Symposium on African Art hosted by the University of Iowa’s School of Art and Art History and the Museum of Art in Iowa City. In addition, this issue highlights various art exhibitions, including Romare Bearden: A Retrospective at The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Hampton University Museum’s first showing of Jacob Lawrence’s Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman series, and the winning of the Dawson Award for Minority Programming by Arts Midwest. Finally, this issue features an analysis of Muneer Bahauddeen’s Orisha Wall in Chicago, Ure’vbu’s works on display at The Art Village in Tennessee, and the sculptural works of El Anatsui. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
