Description
An iconic aspect of Richmond Barthé’s work was his ability to breath life into his sculptures. The energy of his work is powerful in that it provides a sense of beauty, vibrancy, and movement.
The Negro Looks Ahead is an important work because, like other Harlem Renaissance artists, Barthé was interested in showcasing the impact or place of the black diaspora within the larger scope of culture and history.
This work could resemble Barthé’s urging the younger generation, perhaps younger black artists, to look ahead to the future and continue to remain tapped into their own truth.
