Today’s generation of Pop Art—we’ll call it the fourth generation for the purposes of this issue—encompasses the work of numerous African American artists working across a broad range of media. Fourth Gen artists are heavily influenced by hip–hop culture, sci–fi, video games, and other forms of mass cultures.

Spinning off many new styles and forms of Pop Art, this burgeoning Fourth Gen movement deserves the analysis and codification of curators and critics. The next evolution in the experience of young people who are deeply steeped in visual culture is the development of visual literacy that includes detailed knowledge of art and design. So, one of the intents of our Pop Art project is to shape and inform the consumption of visual culture by cultivating visual literacy and artistic connoisseurship.
