The View from Now
Published in 2008, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to charting trends in the visual arts, craft art, architecture and urban planning. It examines the works of the enigmatic P–funk artist, Space Lady, photographer William Anderson, Jr. and the careers and collections of several young African American artists and art collectors. Finally, this issue discusses the emergence of several African American art galleries and alternative art venues in New York City in the 1970s, including the Nyumba Ya Sanaa Gallery, Just Above Midtown Gallery, and Kenkeleba House. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
