The International Review of African American Art, Vol. 22 No. 1 (2008)

$15.00

The 1940s
Published in 2008, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to initiatives and venues that provided opportunities for African American artists in the 1940s, including the Pyramid Club of Philadelphia, the Swann African American Fine Art Auctions, and the St. Louis Museum of Art’s guided tours of New York. In addition, the influence of blues music in the works of painter Rose Piper and the significance of light in Betty Blayton’s paintings are discussed. Finally, this issue celebrates the M. Hank Gallery’s 20th anniversary, presents the winners of the Hampton University Museum’s 3rd Annual New Power Generation exhibition, and highlights several other exhibitions, including the 2006 Art Basel Miami Beach fair and an exhibition of works by Trevor Schoonmaker and Barkley L. Hendricks. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
