On behalf of Hampton University President William R. Harvey and the advisory boards of The International Review of African American Art, I am pleased to acknowledge support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for this special issue of the journal. In 2006, Anne–Imelda M. Radice, director of IMLS, announced an initiative called “Connecting to Collections.” Under this initiative, IMLS and several national partners are providing targeted financial support and working to focus attention on the preservation, conservation and care of museum and library collections containing African American historical and cultural objects and documents.

The theme of this issue is Connecting the Three C’s: Collecting, Conservation, and Collaboration. Some of the articles in this issue focus on the history of collecting in the African American community. Other articles provide technical advice on collections care. A recurring theme across these articles is that there is strength in numbers and collaborative efforts often multiply results. Several successful collaborations are described as models which may be replicated at other locations with other partners.
