Grief Recycled
Published in 1998, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to acknowledging the healing benefit of art when confronted with loss and grief in the works of several artists, including Meg Henson Scales, Joyce Wellman, and John Outterbridge. A recounting of painter Walter Augustus Simon’s time in Greenwich Village in the 1940s, and a tribute to painter Loïs Mailou Jones are also featured. Finally, this issue provides an update on the debate on the use of stereotypical imagery in the works of Kara Walker and Michael Ray Charles, with a dialogue between former IRAAA editor, Juliette Bowles and Walker. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
