The work represent the past. The painting is a metaphor for the human experience of growing, learning, thinking, and the development of sensitivity and responsibility.
House of the Turtle shows buildings on campus illustrated throughout . On the left, the Academy Building rests at the top representing the epitome of knowledge. On the right, Turner Hall, representing an observatory, rises above Virginia Cleveland Hall and Armstrong Slater hall. At the very top of this panel is a boy and girl. The girl is holding a flame of light in her right hand and the boy is protecting the light.
