Published in 2009, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the works and careers of several artists. This issue addresses Gwendolyn Bennett’s career as an artist, illustrator and art educator, who helped create the short–lived publication Fire, and illustrated for the NAACP’s journal Crisis and the Urban League’s Opportunity, but who remains under–recognized for her accomplishments.  In addition, this issue discusses alienation in Hughie Lee–Smith’s paintings and Cold War culture; features correspondence that informs the art of Benny Andrews; examines the historical awareness that informs the works of Jon Onye Lockard; addresses the role of the sculptor as designer and yogi; and evaluates the works of sculptor Chappelle Letman. Finally, this issue spotlights the accomplishments of curator of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston Valerie Cassel Oliver, and serves as a guide to various books, exhibitions, and symposia across the U.S. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
