Published in 1999, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the careers of Hughie Lee–Smith, Paul Keene, Palmer Hayden and Aaron Douglas. It charts the efforts by Patricia Lee–Smith and gallerist June Kelly to bring Hughie Lee–Smith’s paintings into the spotlight, and memorializes the artist, who passed some months after completing the interview with Virginia Spottswood Simon published in this issue. A tribute to the 100th anniversary of Aaron Douglas is also featured with photographs and excerpts from the Fisk University Library’s Special Collections and the Fisk University Galleries’ Collection. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
