Bahia/Power in Tradition
Published in 1990, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the role of art in revitalizing, preserving, and restoring Afro–Bahian society and its people. Addressed in this issue are: the revitalization of the Brazilian town of Cachoeira, the preservation of the Pano de Costa weaving technique, and the religious empowerment of Afro–Bahian women. In addition, this issue spotlights a public monument dedicated to Biddy Mason, a former slave in 19th century Los Angeles who gained notoriety as a midwife, and the historical importance of the sisterhood of the Nossa Senhora Da Boa Morte in Brazil. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
