The International Review of African American Art, Vol. 6 No. 3 (1985)

$15.00

Published in 1985, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the careers and practices of several artists. First, this issue discusses Zulu potter Nesta Nala and her struggle to continue the traditional craft of pottery–making, in spite of the ever increasing influence of Westernization, which sees plastic, enamel and other manufactured containers replacing the art.  Next, this issue covers the dynamic art–making and thought processes that produce the complex works of mixed media artist Alonzo Davis and Alexander “Skunder” Boghossian. In addition, Sue Booker, Ph.D. reminisces about her mother, painter and sculptor Erma Barbour Booker, sharing with readers Booker’s thoughts on art. Finally, this issue briefly highlights the works of sculptor James E. Lewis, whose partnership with the city of Baltimore has resulted in the production of several monuments, including The Black Soldier, a 13–foot–high bronze testament to the participation of African Americans in several U.S. wars.  Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
