Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of W.E.B. Du Bois (1868–1963), this issue builds on Du Bois’s famous notion of “double consciousness” to propose the concept of “triple consciousness.” If for Du Bois, Blackness and whiteness constitute a psychological north and south pole, what happens when a third pole is added?
Here we considered artists working within view not of two cultures (Black America and white America), but three or more. In some cases, that third pole is Caribbean, in other cases African. In one case we consider the African and the European in the enveloping context of the global biennial. As the world becomes ever more tightly interconnected through global communications and networks of travel and immigration, how has art responded in its notions of cultural and physical distance and proximity? We ask these and related questions in this issue.
