Being Richard A. Long: The Life, the Odyssey
Published in 2009, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to writer, poet, art connoisseur, cultural historian and world traveler Richard A. Long. Appearing in this issue is an excerpt from Long’s lecture on painter Romare Bearden’s relationships with women, which Long delivered at a 2006 symposium at Duke University. In addition, this issue covers the careers of artists Louis B. Sloan and Odili Donald Odita, and art administrator Lowery Stokes Sims, Ph.D. Finally, a reprint of the catalogue essay by Taiye Tuakli–Wosornu for the Distant Relatives/Relative Distance exhibition curated by Michael Stevenson Contemporary (Capetown) and on view at the Standard Bank Gallery (Johannesburg) is featured in this issue. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
