This issue, focusing on Southern African American artists of the 19th century, brings to a close a series of three devoted to the Black artistic production of that century. Theresa A. Singleton provides valuable insights on the contribution of archaeology to the study of African American arts. Quilting Historian Cuesta Benberry gives us a cogent analysis of the scholarship to date on African American quilting, one of the few areas of Southern Black artistry that has received considerable attention in the last two decades. Sharon Patton shares her excellent work on Black cabinetmakers of the South, particularly in Louisiana. Her article is complemented by Patricia Brady’s considerable new research on the African American artists of New Orleans. Interviewed by The International Review of African American Art, Richard Dozier discusses the mostly unrecognized contributions and accomplishments of African Americans in the field of architecture. Finally, David Driskell reviews the most recent survey text on African American art,  A History of African American Artists, by Romare Bearden and Harry Henderson.
