Published in 1993, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the art careers of Joyce Wellman, Felrath Hines, Kenneth Falana, Eric Hutchinson and Michael Simon. This issue commemorates the anniversary of three renowned paintings: The Contribution of the Negro to Democracy in America by Charles White, and The Banjo Lesson and its companion The Bagpipe Lesson by Henry Ossawa Tanner, and pays tribute to master artists James Lesesne Wells and Claude Clark Sr. In addition, an interview with artist Fravange Valcin by William Watson Hines is featured in this journal. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
