Description
Created for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Lift Every Voice and Sing is one of Augusta Savage’s most noteworthy works. The original sculpture was created using plaster, painted black to resemble black basalt, and stood roughly 16 feet tall.
Unfortunately, at the conclusion of the fair, Savage could not afford to have it moved or preserved and, therefore, the sculpture was destroyed. Inspired by the song of the same name, Savage’s work depicts an ensemble of children joined in unison and harmony. Also called The Harp, the work acts as a reminder of the importance to uplift and celebrate the voices and creativity of African Americans.
