Published in 1980, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s Black Art: an International Quarterly (predecessor to The International Review of African American Art) is dedicated to Howard Smith’s Africa series, the influence of technology in Venezuelan art, and the art of the Suriname Maroons and of Nigeria.  This issue chronicles the opening of the Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial Museum and National Archives of Black Women’s History in November 1979. Its two new institutions, located at 1318 Vermont Avenue NW and the Logan Circle Historic District in Washington, D.C. are devoted solely to collecting, preserving and interpreting materials which document the history of Black women in the U.S. Finally this issue spotlights an exhibition of toys, games, musical instruments and other art and craft works made for and by African children at The African American Institute in New York. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
