The Many Faces of Charles Sebree
Published in 2002, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the careers of Charles Sebree, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, and Lou Stovall. It includes the first publication of continuing research in the life and works of painter, dancer, playwright, and designer Charles Sebree, whose lack of “public agenda” and self-effacement has led to his under–recognition in American cultural history. Sebree’s Boys without Penises presents a potential hermetic self–portrait produced during a time when several issues plagued the artist’s mind. The similarly difficult path taken by sculptor Nancy Elizabeth Prophet to becoming a renowned artist is also discussed in this issue. Finally, this issue covers Jean and Robert Steele’s collection of prints, the creation of printed works by Lou Stovall, the importance of the Atlanta College of Art in shaping the practices of three African American artists: Radcliffe Bailey, Kara Walker and Lynn Marshall–Linnemeier, and the sanctity of the storefront church. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
