The Black–Indian Connection in Art
Published in 2000, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the intersection of African American and Native American identities and experiences. Parallels in attitudes toward acknowledging and asserting one’s African identity and one’s Native American identity, the influences of both cultures on the visual arts and artists, and how the two cultures merge in the Hampton University Museum and Archives (HUMA) collection are discussed in this issue. This issue also memorializes artist Tom Miller, and former HUMA curator Jeffrey Bruce makes a case for transforming the way art critics approach theory and criticism in his reading of The Art of Romare Bearden–Prevalence of Ritual by M. Bunch Washington and Mask of Art: Breaking the Aesthetic Contract–Film and Literature by Clyde R. Taylor. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
