The Art of Trinidad and Tobago
Published in 1988, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural forms and art–making traditions, and features the works of several regional artists. Highlighted in this issue are the works of self–taught painter Herman B.A. Charles and sculptor Dharmbodh Westmass, who portray the local scenes and people of Trinidad and Tobago honestly and straightforwardly through paint and clay; the sculptures of Samuel Walrond, who seeks to depict man’s inner virtues and rhythms of life, such as compassion, integrity, good and evil, and pride and humility; and the bamboo art of Kenneth LeMaitre and the wood sculptures of Franco Tempro. An interview with Joyce Wong Sang, director and producer of the Best Village Trophy Competition, and a discussion about art’s role in nation building also appear in this journal. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
