The Artist and the Garden
Published in 2006, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the significance of the garden in the art of David C. Driskell, Faith Ringgold and Freddie Styles.  It features an extensive “News and Reviews” section, which encompasses the impact of Hurricane Katrina—from the limited reopening of the Stella Jones Gallery, to the struggles of artists and art collectors to preserve their works in the midst of the storm. Finally, this issue acknowledges awards granted to artists Renée Stout and Willie Cole, offers book reviews, and pays tribute to illustrator Ernest Crichlow and photographer Gordon Parks, whose legacy is continued by his daughter, Toni. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
