Standing at the threshold of the new millennium African Americans have great reason to pause and look back with pride over the last 100 years of our history in America. We have made great contributions to the economic, cultural, and spiritual vitality of our country; too often against great resistance.
The design professions have been areas where we have had to exert great effort and employ sheer tenacity to make our work seen and our presence felt. With this issue of The International Review of African American Art, we take a look backward and a look forward at the applied arts of the interior, fashion, graphic, industrial, and architectural design. We will be looking through the eyes, hearts, and minds of the Organization of Black Designers (OBD), the first and only multidisciplinary organization dedicated to advancing the careers of African American designers and to celebrating and archiving their work.
