Keepers of the Flame:
African American Collections at Black Institutions
Published in 1994, this 64–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s The International Review of African American Art is dedicated to the African American art collections at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Hampton University, Fisk University, North Carolina Central University, Morgan State University, South Carolina State University, Spelman College and Winston–Salem State University. This issue charts the establishment of several major art collections in HBCUs through art connoisseur Richard A. Long and museum director Edmund Barry Gaither. The impact of the Atlanta University Art Annuals in fostering a tradition in African American art, the significance of the South Side Community Art Center, and a conference addressing the connection between African American artists and Europe are also discussed. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, with very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
