Description

Hampton University is pleased to present Jacob Lawrence’s Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman series in this extraordinary publication and exhibit. These powerful paintings, created over fifty years ago by one of America’s greatest artists, continue to speak eloquently of human struggle, determination and dedication. Lawrence depicted the lives of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman in compelling and accessible works of Art. His goal was to document the accomplishments of these two American heroes so that their contributions would not be forgotten. The paintings came to Hampton in 1967. Since that time they have provided inspiration and insight for Hampton students and for the community.

The enduring importance of America’s historically black colleges and universities is perhaps most directly revealed through their critical role in nurturing, preserving, documenting, and transmitting African American culture. Hampton University has been a leader in this area, establishing a collection of African art in the 1870s, beginning the collection of African American music in the same decade, and becoming the first institution to collect African American art in 1894 with the acquisition of Henry O. Tanner’s renowned painting The Banjo Lesson. For much of the 20th century, when most non–black museums and educational institutions did not value and did not collect African American art or artifacts, Hampton has been one of the main repositories of African American culture.
