Description
Painter, sculptor, printmaker, muralist, educator and author, John Biggers (1924-2001) came to Hampton Institute in 1941, where he was inspired to pursue a career in art. He received the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in 1948, and a Ph.D. in 1954 from Pennsylvania State University.
John Biggers was founder and head of the Art Department at Texas Southern University from 1949 until his retirement in 1983. His honors and achievements include numerous awards, one person and group exhibitions, publications, and mural commissions. His art is collected privately and by many of America’s most distinguished museums.
John Biggers is among the best known and most renowned American artists. At Commencement 1990, Hampton University recognized his accomplishments with the award of Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Dr. Biggers was Hampton University’s Artist-in-Residence for the 1990-91 academic year.
