The walls of the Huntington Memorial Library building have been the home of the Hampton University Museum for the past two decades. Over this vital period in the Museum’s history (1997–2017) our collections have become ever more prominent in the annals of American art and among the hearts of collectors and supporters of the Hampton University Museum.
To celebrate the museum’s two decades in its spacious and welcoming home at Huntington, this commemorative issue of The International Review of African American Art recalls the aims and ambitions of Hampton University administrators and museum professionals who envisioned the new facility, while also offering readers a snapshot of some of the groundbreaking exhibitions and installations which the newly renovated spaces enabled.
When envisioning this issue, it was our hope that it would become a ready reference for any reader interested in a historical snapshot of the museum’s most recent history. And, for HU Museum advocates, students, alumni and supporters, a kind of memento revealing two decades of occasions—exhibitions, classes, receptions, engagements—they have experienced at the University Museum.
This issue includes a greater number of photographs depicting artists, exhibitions, installations, acquisitions and receptions that a general IRAAA volume offers to enhance the experience of recollection and commemoration. In this way, we hope the issue itself becomes a postcard of memories from the past twenty years for all IRAAA readers.
Special thanks to former IRAAA editor, Juliette Harris for compiling information on HU Museum history for this issue, to John Welch, HU Museum consultant and Mary Lou Hultgren for editing and organizing this volume.
