This issue of The International Review of African American Art is meant to be a timely and provocative look at the market: how it functions, who’s in it, and specifically what that means for art in the African diaspora.
In our main feature, writer Kristin D. Juarez looks at the people behind the market: the collectors, the benefactors, the curators and others who seem to pull the biggest levers in the Black art world. This “Top 10” is not a wish list; it’s a reality check.
In an extended interview, Nigel Freeman of Swann Galleries describes what it’s like to make headway for art by Black artists in the auction world, and why the work went unrecognized for so long. Daniel Grant explores the dynamics of race in the world of collecting the art of the African diaspora. And we offer a few morsels on Black artists in the world of online art sales.
This issue’s artist project is a series of drawings by Fahamu Pecou, an artist who has straddled the border between art world savoir faire and hip–hop’s ethos of bragging and bling. His images of sagging pants on contorted bodies—adapted especially for the pages of this publication—ask what the place of black men in the continuum of art is.
