Published in 1978, this 72–page volume of the Hampton University Museum’s Black Art: an International Quarterly (predecessor to The International Review of African American Art) is dedicated to utilizing the visual arts as a vehicle for Black protest and empowerment. Discussed in this issue are the philosophical continuities and the “aesthetic toughness” presented in works by African American artists. In addition, this journal examines the life and career of singer Carmen McRae, showcases works by artist Stanley Wilson, and presents a story from Fiji as told to BAQ Editor–in–Chief Val Spaulding. Finally, this issue highlights news from the National Conference of Artists, spotlights an Elizabeth Catlett sculpture unveiled at Howard University, and reviews a Beauford Delaney retrospective. Included in this issue are many color and black & white photographs of artists’ works, and very insightful commentaries by highly respected art reviewers.
