Description

Reuben V. Burrell has been associated with Hampton University for over fifty years. He has been an important presence on the campus and in the community for more than four decades. Arriving as a student in 1938, eleven years later, he assumed the position of campus photographer, a job which he has held continually since that time.

Burrell has been a mentor to students, and a valued friend to many in the Hampton Family. His photography results from his close affiliation with the school and the community. He has documented the growth and development of Hampton Institute of the African American community. However, Burrell is more than a photo journalist, he is a serious and accomplished artist, who through his beautifully composed and technically correct photographs has captured the life and spirit of Hampton.

The images in this exhibit were selected from the countless works created by Burrell during his lengthy career. The initial work was accomplished by Barbara Lamb who undertook this as a part of the work for her M.A. degree in Museum Studies. The exhibition was organized by Jeffrey Bruce, Curator of Exhibitions at the Hampton University Museum.
