Description
The ancient empire of Mali rose from the ancient empire of Ghana. It was founded by the Mandinka people. They were also called the Malinke and Mandigo people. Ancient Mali existed from about A.D. 800 to 1550. The ancient kingdom was different from the Mali of today.
Much of what we know about the empire of Mali comes from the African Griots. The Griots were the official keepers of African history. They made poems, songs and stories of the history and passed it on to the people.
We also have learned about the ancient empire from the writings of people who traveled to ancient Mali. Many of these people were Arab traders. One of these travelers was a man named Ibn Battuta. He was born in Africa and was a great Arab traveler. He traveled to ancient Mali and wrote about his experiences.
We also known about the history of ancient Mali from studying the way people lived in early times. The remains of buildings and artwork from ancient Mali give us more clues about the ancient empire.
